How to use Folder Vault

Short guides for the main things you can do, then answers to common questions.

Get started

  1. Open Folder Vault and tap Allow access.
  2. Turn on Allow access to manage all files, then go back.
  3. Use the sidebar to open Files, Photos, Videos and your vaults.

Create a vault

  1. Tap New vault in the sidebar.
  2. Enter a name and a password twice. There is no password reset.
  3. Pick the encryption level for big videos (Fast, Strong or Full), then tap Create vault.

Hide files

  1. Select files or folders.
  2. Tap Hide, pick an unlocked vault and confirm.

Unlock, watch and lock

  1. Tap a vault and enter its password.
  2. Browse and play files right inside the vault.
  3. Tap Lock, or Lock all, when you are done.

Restore files

  1. In an unlocked vault, select files and tap Restore.
  2. Pick Download, Pictures or Documents. Choose Keep a copy to leave one in the vault.

Watch from your PC or NAS

  1. Share a folder on your computer using Windows file sharing, Mac File Sharing, or your NAS.
  2. Tap Add PC / NAS, enter the computer's IP address, user name and password, and tap Connect.
  3. Play videos, copy files to the headset, or hide a copy in a vault.

Play 3D, VR180 and 360 video

  1. Play a video.
  2. If it looks wrong, open the format menu and set Stereo and Lens.

Questions

What is Folder Vault?

A file manager, private vault and VR video player for Meta Quest. Browse your files, hide private ones behind a password, and watch flat, 3D, VR180 and 360 video.

Which headsets does it run on?

Meta Quest headsets with Horizon OS. Get it from the Meta Horizon Store.

Why does it ask for "All files access"?

A file manager needs to see your files. The permission is only used on the headset, and nothing is uploaded.

How are my files protected?

Photos and files under 64 MB are always fully encrypted (AES-256-GCM), and so are file names and folders. Big files move into the vault instantly and are encrypted at the level you pick: Fast (free) puts encrypted pieces all through the file so nothing can play it, Strong (Premium) encrypts a quarter of it, and Full (Premium) encrypts every byte.

I forgot my vault password. Can you recover it?

No. The password is never stored or sent anywhere, so nobody can recover it, not even us. Keep it somewhere safe.

Can I change a vault password?

Yes. Open the vault's menu and tap Change password. You need the current password.

Can other apps or a PC see my hidden files?

They can see that some encrypted data exists, but not your file names, and they can't open or play anything. Lock your vaults before you lend the headset.

Is there a cloud backup?

No. Vaults stay on your headset only, and a factory reset erases them. Restore anything you want to keep first.

What videos can it play?

Flat, 3D (side-by-side and top-bottom), VR180, 360 and fisheye. It plays MP4 and MKV, including HEVC 10-bit, with AC-3, TrueHD and DTS audio.

Is there a way to zoom VR videos?

Yes. In VR180, 360 and fisheye videos, tap Zoom out or Zoom in in the player (50% to 160%), or hold the thumbstick up or down; tap the percentage to go back to 100%. Folder Vault remembers your zoom for next time.

Can I watch videos from my PC or NAS?

Yes. Tap Add PC / NAS to open Windows or Mac shared folders, or a NAS (SMB), on your home network. It only reads from them and never changes your files.

Is it free?

Browsing files and using vaults are always free. Strong and Full encryption, and some video features, may need a Premium upgrade from the Meta Horizon Store.

Does it collect my data?

Only anonymous usage stats, like which features are used and whether videos play. Never file names, folders or anything in your vaults. Turn them off in Settings, Privacy.
